U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has met with members of a U.S. battle unit in southern Afghanistan that suffered heavy losses last year in the fight against the Taliban.
He told the troops they will soon be part of a “decisive phase” in the war.
Gates paid tribute to the sacrifices of the U.S. combat brigade Tuesday as he spoke to soldiers at an outpost about 50 kilometers north of Kandahar city. The brigade has lost 22 soldiers and has seen 62 others wounded since its deployment last year.

Maybe there is a divine intervention from Allah. If i try to understand this problem i just can not comprehend it. How come US and NATO can not defeat Taliban. The only acceptable answer is that they get support from Allah. How? Don't ask me.

the entire military was cut in half from the end of the Civil War until the Spanish-American —–this was due to the war debt and lack of any major conflicts during this time
the only major operations that the military had was the occupation of the South, which ended with the Compromise of 1877, and the conflicts with the Indian tribes of the West, which died down by 1890
