GOP Pushback Against ‘Liberal’ Levy
There is anger among rank-and-file GOP county leaders over the willingness of state Chairman Ed Cox and his hand-picked regional vice chairs to reconsider Democratic Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy as a potential gubernatorial contender.
Putnam County GOP Chairman Anthony G. Scannapieco, Jr., who has endorsed Rick Lazio, sent an email to Cox today – just hours before Levy is scheduled to meet in Albany with the vice chairs – denouncing Levy as a “liberal” and insisting his selection to run on Row B would be an “insult” to Republicans who have “toiled away” on campaigns.
“I have been a Republican my whole adult life,” Scannapieco wrote in the email, which was obtained by the DN and appears in full after the jump.
“I have been a Republican County Chairman for 14 years. I am stunned that you are considering a liberal Democrat like Steve Levy for a spot on our statewide ticket.”
“This is the same Steve Levy that supported Al Gore, John Kerry, Eliot Spitzer and Barack Obama. This is the same Steve Levy who voted to make Shelly Silver the Speaker of the Assembly. This is the same Steve Levy who voted for one fiscally reckless bill after another.”
(Snip).
“There is a wave of change building in this country. A Republican even won in Massachusetts. This is the absolute worst time to be considering a liberal Democrat like Steve Levy for our ticket and we do so at our own peril.”
It’s worth noting that Scannapieco was not a big Cox supporter during the fight for the state GOP chairmanship last summer. In fact, he briefly floated his own name for the post.
Levy really seems to ignite strong emotions on both sides of the aisle. To the Republicans – at least those who share Scannapieco’s views – he’s a liberal. To some fellow Democrats, particularly Latinos, he’s an immigrant-hating arch-conservative.
Here’s Scannapieco’s email in its totality:
“Dear Chairman Cox:
I have been a Republican my whole adult life. I have been a Republican County Chairman for 14 years. I am stunned that you are considering a liberal Democrat like Steve Levy for a spot on our statewide ticket.
This is the same Steve Levy that supported Al Gore, John Kerry, Eliot Spitzer and Barack Obama.
This is the same Steve Levy who voted to make Shelly Silver the Speaker of the Assembly. This is the same Steve Levy who voted for one fiscally reckless bill after another.
Steve Levy voted in favor of a $3.2 billion tax increase – the largest in New York State history. Steve Levy voted in favor of the $1 billion giveaway to the health care union. Time and time again, Steve Levy stood with Shelly Silver and against our commonsense Republican values.
And his support of big government has continued. He recently said that the Obama stimulus package was “manna from heaven” that would “save lives.”
I am truly puzzled that he is being considered by any Republican for a position on our statewide ticket.
This is an insult to all the Republicans who have toiled away – collecting petitions, phone banking, and working their way through the system.
There is a wave of change building in this country. A Republican even won in Massachusetts. This is the absolute worst time to be considering a liberal Democrat like Steve Levy for our ticket and we do so at our own peril.
Sincerely,
Anthony G. Scannapieco, Jr.

ANALYSIS-Consumer chief delay could hobble new US agency
about 5 hours ago - No comments
By Dave Clarke WASHINGTON, Sept 7 (Reuters) – Prospects are dimming that a new U.S. consumer agency head will be in place this year, prompting fears that what was envisioned by supporters as a powerful watchdog could get off to a rocky start. A dwindling legislative calendar and Republican momentum going into the November elections [...]
Obama’s offensive may not charm business or GOP

President Barack Obama’s economic offensive may not charm business or Republicans. The president’s plans to spend $50 billion on roads and railways and grant businesses $300 billion of investment tax credits have merit. But they don’t look enough to sway a disillusioned corporate America already wondering about the fate of $4 trillion in soon-to-expire tax [...]
Washington Extra — Not another stimulus
about 5 hours ago - No comments
On Wednesday, President Barack Obama plans to announce his latest package of plans to stimulate the sagging U.S. economy, most of which are already known. It was hardly a surprise to see Republicans quickly positioning themselves to block the plans, but more disappointing to the White House must have been the cautious response even from [...]
Cleveland was no accident, Gibbs confirms

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed what had been suspected. There was a reason for choosing Cleveland as the venue for President Barack Obama’s economy speech on Wednesday and his name is John Boehner — the man who would likely be House Speaker if Republicans oust the Democrats from control on Nov. 2. Cleveland was where House Republican leader Boehner [...]
State Dept: church Koran burning plan”un-American”

There have been lots of angry words over plans by an obscure Florida pastor to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. But State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley pulled out the biggest gun of all on Tuesday in his effort to distance the government from the pastor’s incendiary proposal — [...]
Stanley Kutler: COMING ATTRACTION: MORE WAR

By Stanley Kutler “It is time to turn the page,” President Barack Obama said as he announced the “end” of combat operations in Iraq. Meanwhile, those who brought us that unnecessary war remain committed to such policies and, if returned to power, are likely to carry them out. Sadly, the president neither confronted nor repudiated [...]

by Frank James John Smierciak/AP Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, October 2009. Chicago Mayor Richard M. Snug as a flub in a rug?

Blog Guy, did you read about the problem with that brand-new rug in the Oval Office, with the great American quotes woven along the edge? Yes, you’re talking about the embarrassing error over one of the quotes: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice,” is attributed to Martin Luther [...]

The “relaunch” of the Middle East peace process is, at best, an Arab-Israeli peace process. And, to be even more accurate, the process is really the highly conditioned Israeli-Palestinian “track” of old. Read More… More on Barack Obama
EU delivers its own “State of the Union” address
about 15 hours ago - No comments
The European Union talks frequently about wanting to be a bigger player in the world, about making its political influence match its economic weight and the need to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the United States. And at least in one respect it can now say it’s America’s equal – both have a State of the Union address. Jose Manuel [...]

I think true fiscal Conservatives have been awake for awhile. McCain has been pandering to the religious Conservatives at all costs. That's his main problem, not finding a balance.
